September 23, 2003 By: Mark Harris Super precision bearing selection catalogue & engineering guide is one of the most comprehensive availableThe Barden Corporation has produced its most comprehensive publication to-date for specifying and selecting speciality super precision bearings and assemblies. The combined product selector and engineering guide has been produced to simplify the task of bearing selection and application for specifiers in high-tech market sectors, such as aerospace, turbomolecular pumps, motor sport, medical devices and instrumentation , where super precision is a standard requirement. An essential tool for bearing users, the new publication covers what is probably the largest range of speciality super precision bearings available from any one manufacturer. It runs to 146 pages and is divided into two comprehensive sections dealing with 1) Product Selection and 2) Engineering Information, the latter providing over 70 pages of useful data for the bearing user on a host of topics including bearing selection, handling, mounting and fitting, preload, operating speeds, seals and shields, cage types and many, many more. Contained with the Product Section are full selection tables for Deep Groove instrument, thin section, flanged, spindle and turbine bearings, and also Angular Contact bearings in both inch and metric configurations. As an aid to the catalogue user, the selection tables are introduced by two page fold-outs which give full generic details of the bearing types and their design features. In addition, the tables benefit by including relevant data on limiting speeds, static capacity and basic dynamic load ratings, alongside bearing dimensions and nomenclature. Also contained within the product section are details of Barden's unique capabilities to produce product for special applications. In many cases incorporating special or customised bearings can reduce the overall cost of a piece of equipment. Barden is at the forefront of this development, as underlined by a number of examples in the catalogue highlighting Barden special bearings for use in high speed dental handpieces, vacuum pumps, Formula 1 cars, gyros, aerospace applications and X-ray machines. The extremely comprehensive Engineering section in the second half of the catalogue offers very useful information on Barden's state-of-the-art Surface Engineering Technology as well as more traditional information on all aspects of bearing selection and use. With the accent in many high technology applications becoming increasingly focused on higher speeds, three pages in the engineering section are also devoted to ceramic hybrid bearings, including Barden's unique X-Life Ultra bearings. A synergy of hybrid materials, surface engineering and lubrication technology, X-Life Ultra bearings outlast conventional hybrid bearings by providing unsurpassed levels of toughness and corrosion resistance.
