September 27, 2003 By: Mark Harris Global WIN introduces the new revolutionary iceAge thermo-electric cooling system designed using conventional ball bearingsThe iceAge innovative technology provides high cooling performance for both K7 and P4 CPU’s with its universal heatsink design. Taipei, Taiwan, June 3rd, 2003 - Global WIN a leading specialist in thermal conductivity and heat dissipation, presents iceAge, a thermo -electric cooling system for PC Processors. Global WIN’s latest cooling solution incorporates quality engineering and original design to provide an excellent value-added package for the consumer. The unit itself consists of a power and controller device in the form of a PCI card which acts as a high-powered custom thermo-electric unit, a cold plate cooler (peltier module) which sits on the CPU, a heatsink and a temperature regulated fan. Furthermore Global WIN also provides users with the option of using their patented I-STORM adapter which is also included with this product allowing the switch from a 70mm to an 80mm fan both quickly and easily. The enhanced features of this product include the intelligent thermo -electric unit which controls the active pumping of heat from the cold plate to the heatsink which in turn is passed to the fan; the case fans then remove this heat from the computer case. More specifically; central to the above technology is the microprocessor itself which controls the 3-step fan speed and also allows for the cooling of the CPU around ambient temperature. The way in which this works is that the microprocessor controller receives inputs from the CPU temperature sensors; these inputs are received 40 times per second and if required the cooling power is adjusted accordingly. Therefore if the CPU is running hot and the microprocessor technology kicks in to place, once this thermal load is reduced the fans return to a quiet operation and the CPU fan can run at ½ their power again; dramatically reducing the noise. In addition to this, users are able to reduce the noise of their system by connecting one or more case fans to the Active Cool PCI card. These will also be controlled along with the CPU fan. To avoid the risk of any condensation the thermo-electric unit is enclosed in a specially designed case. The Active Cool PCI card includes three LEDs. The blue LED at the back of the bracket flashes five times and then remains lit, indicating that the iceAge is functioning properly. The two green LEDs located to the rear of the PCI card indicate whether troubleshooting is required. Furthermore, the cooling mode for the systems can be switched by means of a jumper between Extra-Quiet (allows a small temperature increase before turning the fans on to minimise fan noise); and Extra-Cool (cooling begins whenever the CPU temperature begins to rise). The package contents include an English user manual (German and French versions are available on the Global WIN website), Active Cool PCI card, iceAge cooling unit (universal for both AMD and Intel CPU), two heat sink clips for Intel P4 CPUs, a power cord, silicone compound, an 80 mm NCBearing fan with LED ,the patented I-STORM adapter, a fan duct for 80mm case fan . Nanometre Ceramic Fan One of the advantages of the iceAge cooler is that it uses a Nanometre Ceramic Fan. Instead of using conventional ball bearings Global WIN is using its own design of Nanometre Ceramic Bearings. Thanks to the increased solidity of Nanometer Ceramics whose other attributes include anti-shock and anti- vibration; the products life span is a great deal longer. Furthermore NCB is resistant to oxidatio n or chemicals and is also water-proof. Based on this new technology the noise emission is lower than that of other coolers due to the fact that the parts are manufactured with higher precision, which allows for extra space for longer blades, which in turn enables Global WIN to reduce the speed of the fan. I-STORM Adapter One of the benefits of the iceAge product is that the well known and unique I- STORM adapter is provided as an added extra to the package. This includes the I-STORM adapter + fan screws allowing the end-user to choose between the 70mm fan or the 80mm I-STORM adapter depending on their preference. The adapter’s function is to guide and disperse the airflow towards the centre of the heatsink, therefore increasing the level of efficiency of the cooler. Furthermore the I-STORM adapter enables the usage of an 80 mm fan on a 70 mm heatsink. The end result is lower noise disturbance.
